SUMMARY: Older children's/teen coming of age novel. City raised Elena goes to
visit her widowed grandfather who lives alone, except for his horses, in the wide
open spaces of Wyoming. A solitary man who has seemingly given up on life since wife died, he has not seen his grand-daughter in six years. However the pair soon develop a close bond, fuelled by Elena's similarity to and her interest in her dead grandmother. When Elena learns that her grandmother was a famous barrel racer, she wants to follow in her footsteps, learning to ride and then developing a close relationship with the horse whom her grandmother loved.

SUMMARY: Adult/older teen read. With patience, persistence and love, a man called Bird befriends Annie, an abused and difficult mare. Eventually, Annie reciprocates Bird's affection, but their relationship is sorely tested when they are separated by a catastrophic wildfire. In order to reunite, they must battle not only the forces of nature but the greed and cunning of unscrupulous men.
Easy to find in the UK. Ten Thousand Heavens is still in print at time of writing (2016) and is available in the UK as well as USA, also in e-book format. Elena of the Stars is a little harder to find in the UK. Editions also available in Spanish and Italian language in these respective countries.
